BIO:Began car racing in France in 1995, winning the French F3 title in 1999 with La Filiere, and competing in the Le Mans 24 Hours for the first of six times as of 2008.

Moved up to F3000 in 2000, clinching the championship in 2002. Tested for Arrows before the team folded, which left him without an F1 drive. Moving to Champ Car with Newman-Haas in 2003, taking three wins. In 2004 he won the first of what would be four consecutive championships, ending with a total of 31 wins, the third-highest in series history.

Finally graduated to F1 with Toro Rosso in 2008 after testing for the team throughout 2007. Was running fourth when his car broke down in Melbourne, but was still classified seventh, scoring points on his debut. Was running third on the final lap at Spa when rain fell, relegating him to seventh again. Qualified fourth on the grid at Monza but the car stalled on the formation lap, and then was penalized after originally finishing sixth at Fuji!
