Track Description:
Regularly listed as a favorite circuit among drivers and fans, Spa-Francorchamps held a race in the inaugural championship year of 1950, when drivers were faced with the daunting 8-mile original circuit, featuring legendary corners such as Burneville and the Masta Kink, taken flat-out in top gear with the only runoff being a telegraph pole and a house. The old circuit was taken off the calendar after Pedro Rodriguez's 1970 victory, still the fastest Grand Prix of all-time that did not take place at Monza. The modern circuit brought F1 back to Spa in 1983, and despite being toned down, most agreed that it was a faithful recreation. The easing of the Eau Rouge corner made it the biggest challenge to a modern F1 driver, with any mistake of mechanical error being punished with a trip into the scenery at high speed.
