Track Description:
First hosted a Formula 1 race in 1991, Spain regularly enjoyed some of the lowest crowd attendances on the schedule until Fernando Alonso began racing for Renault in 2003. Since then, the sport has become one of the most popular in the country, with the Spanish Grand Prix being among the most high profile on the current calendar, and Alonso won his home event in 2006, receiving the trophy from King Juan Carlos himself. Other memorable moments include Nigel Mansell and Ayrton Senna famously battling wheel-to-wheel on the main straight in 1991, and the introduction of an infamous tire chicane in 1994, as the Nissan chicane was considered too dangerous in the post-Imola safety drive.
