Track Description:
Interlagos has become the regular host of the closing round of each championship season, having spent most of its time on the calendar as an early season event, even acting as the opener on several occasions, the last of which was in 1995. It first held a championship event in 1973 on the five mile full circuit, which looped back in on itself. Emerson Fittipaldi won the first two events, before Paulista Jose Carlos Pace won the 1975 edition. After his death in a plane crash in 1977, the track was named in his honor. The track was supplanted by Jacarepagua on the F1 schedule full-time in 1981, but won its place back in 1990, as Sao Paulo's Ayrton Senna was at the height of his powers. His took emotionally-charged wins on his home circuit in both 1991 and 1993. Latterly, Fernando Alonso, Kimi Raikkonen and Lewis Hamilton all clinched titles here, with Hamilton taking his championship with a last lap, last corner pass on Timo Glock.
